The Unlikely Enemy: Exposing the Truth About Hidden Sugars

Simple sugars hurt our health in more ways than one. Unlike complex sugars which can be found in dairy products, whole grains, nuts or fruits that are actually good for our health, simple sugars are detrimental to our health and are added to certain packaged products for the sole purpose of improving their tastes, appearance, and longevity.

Now we know what their purpose is, let’s look at how they are hidden and how much damage they can cause to our bodies.

The rate of added sugar consumption today is at an all-time high because most individuals simply don’t understand how they get there. Added sugars have been linked to degenerative heart diseases, liver failure, obesity and tooth decay. Try as we might to improve our diets and meet the basic nutritional requirements that are expected of us, somehow we still fall short because the enemy lurks within.

Sugar has been described as a “sweet poison” and rightly so because it does so much damage to our bodies; one teaspoon of sugar contains about 16 calories but no vitamins, minerals or phytochemicals.  The WHO organization and the American Heart Association recommend we reduce our daily free sugar intake to less than 6 teaspoons per day. This is because they offer absolutely no nutritional benefits to us, but how can we possibly cut down our intake of free sugars effectively if we do not recognize the various forms sugars can take?

Here’s a great infographic that could really help you out; so next time you reach for a bottle of sweetened yogurt or a can of soda at the grocery store, you might want to take 1 minute to read the product information.

My 4 Years Wellness Checkup

OH yeah I had a long day today. Thanks to mommy and daddy for bringing me to the doctor’s office. I wasn’t able to play longer because we were called too soon. Inside the small room, the doctor was so friendly to me while he did the wellness check up to me. I was smiling and happy all along, little did I know that I would be poked right after the doctor was out of that room. Ouch, I received four injections on my thighs today. Two each thigh! But I was  a brave girl, I only cried for ten seconds and that was it.
